Nanine Meiklejohn

Nanine Meiklejohn passed away on May 1st, 2023.  Her life partner and fellow classmate, Michael Fields, writes:  "It is with heavy heart that I must report that Nanine passed away this afternoon around 4p.  She was sleeping peacefully and passed without pain or discomfort...I don’t know if it is a coincidence but Nanine was a champion of labor and the working man.  Today is May 1st, the day most of the world celebrates Labor Day."

Her obituary follows:

I'd start with expletives that came to mind, but that fails to honor Nanine.

I had hoped that the issues with her immune system were just one more obstacle to her continued luminosity.   Michael, I am grieving with you, and raging against the dying of the Light, yet hers is not gone.

Blessings, love, in the Mystery,       Emily

Mike, so sad for your loss. I just met her for conversation and discussion last reunion and only just touched on the force of nature that moved her. You and she shall be in my heart and prayers.

Steadfast and fierce in her loyalties, Nanine also had a wonderfully infectious laugh, loving to take good-hearted delight in ironic amusements and simple fun. I couldn't help but think fondly of Nanine again yesterday, upon reading the state birthplace historical marker for an earlier era labor activist, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, had been summarily removed, as history still controversial to acknowledge. I am sad at the passing of an old friend, and send thoughts in sympathy to Michael Fields.

Michael, condolences to you on the tragic loss of your partner Nanine.  It is so sad she is gone.

Both my wife María and I delighted in spending time with Nanine and Michael at our 50th Reunion.  I am so glad María got to meet Nanine, as I was so glad to reconnect with her.  I hadn't had any contact with her since we were students at Swarthmore.

What a lovely person and great spirit!   As another mixed-heritage couple, Nanine and Michael were very welcoming to us and invited us to visit them.   COVID got in the way of this happening.   Nanine and I talked about our common interest and involvement in labor activism.

Nanine's deep social commitment and accomplishments are consistent with her grandfather Alexander Meiklejohn who was an influential figure in US life.. He combined developing a liberated model of education with commitment to democracy and civil liberties .  The Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute started in Berkeley in 1965 and is still active.  It was led by Ann Fagan Ginger for 53 years!  I attended an event they put on in 1998 which had a big influence on my life.
