In Memory

Kirk B. Roose

I'm the son of Kirk Roose '68, who I'm sad to report passed away on April 27. My mom (Diana Roose '70) wanted me to be sure the school knows.

Thanks very much, and sorry to be the bearer of this news, especially if you knew him.

Kirk, it feels like a cheat to have you gone so close to the reunion.  Quiet, quick, deep wit.

Kirk represented the best of a Swarthmore lawyer.

His passing reminds me that the college needs to respect our lawyer and doctor graduates more, to the point of establishing an appropriate affinity group(s). I regret that he and I had not exchanged views more. Let's find a way to fix this, and bring us together.

How sad. Reading his bio, I remembered that Kirk sang songs of mine at Swarthmore and Princeton, while we were undergraduates. He was a fine singer, with great humor, a lovely person.

The College Bulletin for the summer, 2018, published the following:

Kirk, a Quaker, attorney, tennis player, and activist who loved walking the shore of Lake Erie, died April 27, 2018.

In addition to helping thousands of disabled Ohioans receive Social Security benefits through his law practice, Kirk was a lifelong lover of barbershop harmony, arranging hundreds of songs in four-part harmony and singing with and directing numerous quartets  and choruses — including an unforgettable performance at Carnegie Hall.
